Playaways are here today

Audiobooks. Books on tape. Recorded books. Downloadable audiobooks. Library patrons have been enjoying these for years. Some listen to them while relaxing, or working around the house, or while commuting in the car.

Recently the Osterhout library has begun offering a brand new technology called Playaways. With these, all you need is a set of headphones (almost any set should fit the standard jack). There's no downloading or switching discs required. You may be wondering how you will listen to an audiobook with no tape, CD or mp3 player. The answer is simple: the "book" and the "player" are one and the same! And it only weighs about 2 ounces. And it's actually smaller than a pack of cards.

Each Playaway comes in a plastic container about the size of a VHS tape, with a foam insert to protect the unit. The simple operating instructions are on the inside cover. There's also a spare battery included (each battery should last about 7 hours.)

On your next library visit, you can browse our initial collection of 20 Playaways, "the first pre-loaded digital audiobook," near the New Book display. Current titles include such favorites as Dan Brown's Angels & Demons, Lisa Scottoline's Dirty Blonde and Janet Evanovich's Motor Mouth. (Earbud headphones are also available for sale at the Circulation desk for $2, so you will have your own pair to keep.)

The Illusionist comes to you from the producers of Sideways and Crash. It's being described as a romance flick, but pretty much every movie and book you read has some element of a relationship in it, so don't be scared away by the "L" word. It is largely a story of mystery, with strong acting, and an interesting story. The interesting story part comes from author Steven Millhauser. The film is based on the short story Eisenheim the Illusionist, from a short story collection The Barnum Museum. All of these stories are wonderful. If you like one, you will like them all.

Published to coinside with the fiftieth anniversay of Howl and Other Poems, this new attempt to decipher some of what is Allen Ginsberg is the only one to cover his entire life. Ginsberg's unpublished journals were used largely to accurately describe the life and times of this can't get enough of figure.

On July 28, 1841, the body of a young women was found floating in the Hudson River. Later she was discovered to be a cigar salesgirl who had gone missing three days earlier. New York in the mid-nineteenth century was interested why her murder could not be solved, when a struggling writer named Edgar Allen Poe decided to take on the case. Thirty-one year old Poe had just published "The Murders in the Rue Morgue." A year later desparate for success, Poe sent his famous detective, C. Auguste Dupin on the case of a liftime, involving a crime that changed the city.

The Osterhout Library and its Branches are having a contest to win an MP3 player. The reason we are doing this is to aquaint our patrons with the new downloadable audiobooks service that was written about earlier. All you have to do it go to our web page at www.osterhout.lib.pa.us and click on the downloadable books icon. On the right hand side there is a phrase e-audiobooks. Click on that and look through the list of the 1500 plus titles. Write down 2 of the titles that you would use, put your name and phone number on that paper and bring it into the library. Hand it in at the Circulation Desk at any of the 4 Osterhout sites. the drawing will be held on October 2nd so hurry up and take a look now. It couldn't be easier and you just might win.

I am sorry that we haven't update information here in a while. We have had some staff changes and time has just flown by. Some good news is that Ed Lupico, who is working on his Masters in Library Science, has been appointed Director of the Plymout Public Library. Way to go, Ed! Good luck and we will miss you. Ed had been doing a great job on this blog. He will be a hard act to follow.

We also lost Molly Rusak who returned to college this fall. Mary Sherman and Sara Katrenicz have started at the circulation desk and have been fast learners. Please stop in and welcome Mary and Sara. I know they would love to meet everyone.

SNEAK PREVIEW: Downloadable Audiobooks

For our patrons who enjoy listening to audiobooks (and there are many of you), the Osterhout is pleased to offer a new service, beginning August 1. Patrons will be able to log on to Netlibrary via the Osterhout website and download audiobooks directly to a home computer or portable audio device. No holds, no waiting, no late fees!
You can "check out" a maximum of 10 audiobooks at one time. They do not have to be returned since after 3 weeks the file will expire and will no longer work. You can renew the file, like a regular book, for an additional 3 weeks by logging in in to your NetLibrary account.
All you need is a computer that supports Windows Media Player (version 9 or above) or a portable audio device such as one of the following:

MuVo NX or Zen Touch (Creative Labs)
Digital Jukebox (Dell)
DMP-X20 (Gateway)
iFP-890 (iRiver)
Lyra (RCA)
Cali or Karma or Nitrus (Rio)

Setting up your NetLibrary account is a simple one-time thing. After doing this, you can start choosing titles you want to download from a database of over 1400 different books, including adult fiction and non-fiction, as well as books for children and young adults.

THE GIFT of a book to honor or memorialize a special person is a lasting tribute that makes itself felt through years to come. Some reasons for giving a book include:

As a memorial for a deceased family member or friend
To honor a child's birthday, emphasizing the importance of reading in his or her life
To celebrate a special anniversary or event (graduation, wedding, etc.)

You can participate in the Osterhout Free Library's gift book program by filling out the form available in the library and returning it with your tax-deductible donation. (There is a minimum donation of $10 for the purchase of a children's book or $20 for the purchase of an adult book.) Gift books are identified with a bookplate inside the book's cover. An acknowledgement card will be mailed to the party you wish to be notified. Your name and the honoree's name will be placed in our permanent Gift Book register on display at the library. On arrival, all gift books are prominently displayed along with the other new books.

We do accept suggestions from all of our patrons when considering which new books to add to our collection. Feel free to call, stop in, or send an email with the title you're requesting. We will review the suggestion, and if the book is purchased, you will be the first to check it out!

In addition, through our interlibrary loan program, we can obtain any books in the Luzerne County Library System for you to pick up at the library nearest you. We can also obtain hard-to-find titles from other libraries in the state. Just ask at the Information Desk.

Now the library is offering patrons the opportunity to receive these overdue notices via EMAIL. If you sign up for this quick, convenient service, we will no longer send a printed notice, but will send an email instead. You will be responsible for keeping your email address updated with the library, as well as checking your email.

You may choose one of the following 3 ways to begin the service:

Vacation Loan...Have A Nice Trip

The Osterhout Free Library hopes you'll include books and other library materials in your travel plans this summer. Our VACATION LOAN option makes worrying about deadlines disappear! When you're checking out at the Circulation Desk, just ask the clerk for a vacation loan and let them know how long you'll need the materials for. All books, CDs, and audiobooks can be taken out on extended loan EXCEPT:

NEW titles can only be checked out for the regular loan period.
DVDs and VIDEOs can only be checked out for a week (as usual).

So wherever this summer finds you--at the lake, the shore, visiting relatives in far-flung locales, or exploring a new city--take along a book to relax with, an audiobook to make the auto trip more interesting, or an armload of children's books to keep the kids amused and learning at the same time. (This program is available for any vacations year-round--just ask!)

BORROW BY MAIL PROGRAM

If you are a reader who is unable to come to the library due to illness or disability, this program is for you. Patrons may borrow books using a Postal Request Card purchased from the library. Cost for each card is 50 cents, and each one is used to request a specific title. The library will mail the book to you at no additional charge. It is your responsibility to return the book either through the mail (a mailing label is included with the book) or by dropping it off directly at the library.

Those interested in the program may call the library at 823-0156, ext. 214.

(Note: Patrons who would like to use this service for convenience alone may purchase Request Cards at 75 cents each.)

Read & Discuss The Natural

One Valley, One Book. Leadership Wilkes-Barre has chosen the book The Natural, by Bernard Malamud, as this year's topic of discussion. Everyone in Wyoming Valley is invited to read the book, discuss it together, and view the movie. In fact, there are still FREE copies of the book available at the Osterhout Library, so just stop in and ask for one.

TLC Book Club presents Dave King

Where will you be at 7pm on Thursday, March 30? Hopefully you'll be sitting in the audience at Wyoming Seminary's Stettler Learning Center on Sprague Avenue in Kingston. The TLC bookclub, a joint effort of the Tudor Bookshop (Wyoming Ave, Kingston) and the Times Leader, will sponsor yet another author's visit to our area. How often have you discussed a book WITH the author? Now is your chance.
This time that book is The Ha-Ha. The book's author, Dave King, currently residing in Brooklyn, has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize. This, his first novel, is a deeply moving story about the cost of war and the value of human connection. The book's central figure, after a blow to his head during his stint in the army, has not spoken for 30 years. Howard Kapostash is viewed as disturbed because he cannot communicate with others, but in reality he is same person inside. His high school sweetheart, now a single mom, needs his help to care for her 9 year-old son while she is in rehab. How will Howard face the world he has isolated himself from all these years? Read the book and discover what path everyone takes. Then discuss your impressions with other readers and the author himself.

When the parade goes marching by on March 12, don't miss the Osterhout Free Library float! (And be sure to get one of the gold tickets we'll be dispensing. Be sure to come out for the annual parade in downtown Wilkes-Barre, which will feature something for everyone, young and old, from fire trucks to brass bands.

FREE PARKING AT BOSCOV'S

For those of you who like to see the new additions to the collection, we have created space for just those items. When you come into the library and turn left you always found the new books, both fiction and non-fiction on the front shelves for the videos. You will now notice that we have gotton rid of many older video titles and replaced some in dvd format. We have started purchasing more paperback books and have them on display and also on the now available shelving, you will see the new disc books that have been added. Very soon you will also find some new children's and young adult titles. This repositioning puts all the new material at your fingertips for your convienence.

We have added some great new disc books by authors you all know. Some are pictured below. Come in, check out the NEW section and let us know if you like it.

Winter Vacation !

Doesn't everyone like to get away sometime? Winter is just a good time to escape the Northeast. Many people are familiar with the Frommer's travel guides and the Fodor's travel guides, well we have both. Some of the new titles that we just added are listed below. Come borrow one and even if you can't go now, you can do some armchair travelling and plan your next trip.

Doesn't the Fodor's Caribbean Ports of Call 2006 look enticing? Wouldn't that be a lot better than shivering and shovelling. If you aren't a cruise taker, the Islands themselves would probably do very well for a change of scenery.

There are wonderful warm spots in America to go visit. How about a trip
using Frommer's Los Angeles 2006, or Frommer's Unofficial Guide to
Disneyland 2006? There is lots to see out west. Don't forget about Arizona or San Diego when you are thinking sunshine and warmth. We now have the 2006 edition of many cities and states. Stop in and see if you can't find one you like and escape this winter weather.

Tudor Times-Leader Community Library Book Club

The Tudor Bookshop in Kingston and the Times Leader have been sponsoring a TLC bookclub. Once a book is chosen, the author is invited to come to Wyoming Seminary's Stettler Learning Center on Sprague Avenue in Kingston. Lynn Gonchar from the Tudor makes sure each public library in the Luzerne County Library System has a copy of the book and everyone is invited to a great discussion of the book WITH the author. It has to be one of the best nights going for readers.

On Tuesday, February 7th at 7 pm, Ron McLarty author of The Memory of Running will be at Seminary's Stettler Learning Center. Ron is an award winning actor and playwright best known for his appearances on television series, including Law & Order, Sex and the City, the Practice and Judging Amy. Borrow the book from the Osterhout, buy it from the Tudor or get one that night and Ron will autograph it for you.

Now that the holiday shopping is done , the presents are opened and the visitors have gone home, it is time to rest. Catch up on your reading with a good novel from the library. With the kids home from school and nothing for them to do, you can borrow some movies for them to see from the library. When you come into the library for your choices for the family, you may need help carrying things around. Did you ever notice the baskets we have for you to use while you collect your paperbacks or your movies? They are directly across from the Circulation Desk to the left of the display shelf. Early closing over Christmas week

As posted earlier, we are closed on Saturday and Monday over Christmas and Saturday and Monday over New Year's. What I forgot to say is that we will be closing at 5:00 pm during the week. That means that on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday between Christmas and New Year's, we will be open from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. We are, of course, always open on the web at www.osterhout.lib.pa.us.

Holiday Closings

For the Holiday Season, the Osterhout Free Library will be closed on Saturday, December 24 th, Monday, December 26 th, Saturday, December 31 st and Monday, January 2 nd. The Circulation Deparment wants to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a very Happy Hanukkuh and a fun filled Kwanza. Enjoy!

Holiday Gifts!

How quickly the holiday season has come upon us again! Black Friday has come and gone and there are still gifts to buy. Sometimes it is difficult to buy a gift for someone. He, or she, keeps saying nothing is needed, "there is too much stuff in my house now. Don't worry about getting me anything." The Osterhout Library, as always, is here to make your life easier. Did you know you can give a donation to the Library in Honor of someone? When the item is purchased, a gift plate is placed inside the book, on the video box, or cd case stating it was purchased in honor of your relative or friend. We send out a card to the person stating that a gift was purchased in his/her honor. This is a long lasting gift that is useful to many people.

If you would like to make a donation in honor of someone for this Holiday Season, please stop by or call the Osterhout Library at 823-0156 ext 214.

The Library just received new canvas bags which will be sold for $5.00 plus tax at the Circulation Desk. These great new bags are green and white, have a front pouch and zipper closed so your books won't fall out. If you have a big reader in your house, these make the perfect, inexpensive gift for them to use when they visit the libray. We are selling them at the Circulation Desk.

We have a fun cd for sale. A local radio station, 102.3 The Mountain, created a great cd, MOUNTAINGROWN vol. 1. It has 18 original songs by local artists and all proceeds benifit the Osterhout. If you or someone you know likes groups such as Original Black Dog, Plus 3, 40 Lb Head, the Badlees they and many others are on this disc. Just ask at the Circulation Desk for your this great gift idea! It is only $10.00 (tax included).

The architectural beauty of the Osterhout Library has been noted by many people and organizations over the years. That beauty is captured on notecards. There are 15 notecards in a pack and these sell for $4.00 plus tax. There is a limited supply left so if you like this idea, stop by the Circulation Desk soon!

Books From Television

If you liked the books by John Edward and Sylvia Browne and are fascinated by mediums and the unknown, you are probably a big fan of the NBC television show MEDIUM. We just got in the book on Allison Dubois the woman who ispired the show. It is Don't Kiss Them Goodbye and I am reading it right now. It will be back by Monday, the 28th if you want to try it.

The other television show that is causing a lot of discussion is Desperate Housewives. The Osterhout now has a copy of a book that tells about the actors and how the show was made. Just called Desperate Housewives: Behind Closed Doors, this book has great pictures and stories about the show.

The National Book Award for Fiction was announced November 17. This year's deserving winner is Europe Central by William Vollman. The Osterhout Library owns this title as well as some of his other fiction titles. If you can't get a hold of Europe Central right away, you might like to try Butterfly Stories, The Rainbow Stories, The Royal Family, Argall: a Book of North American Landscapes or Thirteen Stories and 13 Epitaphs to tied you over. Call the Information Services Desk to reserve this award winner. (823-0156 ext 214).

The winner for non-fiction is The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion. Other non-fiction titles that we own of hers are Where I Was From, Political Fictions, White Album, Miami and Salvador. Just call the library to ask for any of the titles from this great writer.

He paid no fine!

In conjunction with the Feed a Friend program, the libraries in Luzerne County are offering a fine free coupon if you donate food or money to the Feed a Friend project. Last week, a gentleman returned a book that he found that was 51 weeks overdue. He brought it in with some food, got his coupon and redeemed it immediately, not paying a penny in overdue charges for the almost year long overdue item. Now is the time for you to search your house for the material for which you have been receiving overdue notices and bring them in. Give us some food for our Feed a Friend box and you won't have to pay a fine for the item! One coupon per day is given and can be redeemed on one item. Help us help others and save yourself money.

Closed for Thanksgiving

The Osterhout Free Library will close at 4:00 pm on Wednesday, November 23rd and be closed all day November 24th for Thanksgiving. If you can not return an item before 4:00 pm on Wednesday, just be sure to get it to us on Friday and there will be no overdue charge. This is especially important for movie borrowers. Hours on Friday are 8:30 am until 5:00 pm. The entire Circulation Staff wishes all of you a great Thanksgiving Day.

Recycling @ Work

Did you know that you can drop off used toner and ink cartridges at the Osterhout Library on South Franklin Street for recycling? There is a cardtable just inside the front door. You will see boxes in which you can put them. Whether you have one cartridge from a printer at home, or have an office full of used toner or ink cartridges, you can bring them in for us to recycle.

We also take used cell phones for recycling. If you got a new picture phone with your new service and don't know what to do with your old, outdated phone, bring it into the library and put it in the recycle box. Just be sure the service is cancelled and that it is an inactive phone.

Fine Free Coupons

Bring in a non-perishable food item (s) or make a monetary donations to this library for Feed a Friend any time between now and November 18th and you will receive a coupon for the fine free return of one overdue library item at any of the Luzerne County System's fifteen locations. There is a limit of one coupon per donation per day.
